2014 Kid's Fishing Clinic Recap
On Saturday, April 12, over 160 kids and their families braved inclement weather to partake in the 2014 Kid’s Fishing Clinic. SEWTU and the West Bend Kiwanis Early Risers hosted the event at Sandy Knoll County Park in West Bend. These DNR sponsored events were held at Urban Fisheries all over Southeast Wisconsin.
Fishing poles, bait, and lures were made available to the kids at no charge. The DNR helped out by stocking 900 Rainbow Trout earlier in the week. 13 volunteers from TU helped make the event a success. Our volunteered worked the bait and lure stations and assisted kids with their casting and their catching.
Some of the older kids were able to cast a further distance. They were able to get at the rainbows which seemed to hang out in the deeper water. Some of the younger kids were able to entice some of the ponds resident bluegills to bite closer to shore.
Lightning from an afternoon thunderstorm forced everyone indoors. SEWTU volunteers Mike Keagel, George Batcha, and Larry Clowry were ready for them. Mike had an educational table set up with fishing and watershed related games and prizes. George tied flies with the kids while Larry built spinners for them. Food was served and provided by the Kiwanis Early Risers volunteers. We’re hoping for better weather and a bigger turnout next year! Thanks to all who stopped by and helped out.
