Karcher Creek Workday, July 12th!

SEWTU's next workday is Saturday July 10th 9am-Noon. Karcher Creek is at the southern end of the chapter's area. Spring fed Karcher Creek is located in southwest Racine County...south of Burlington, WI.  Specifically it is located on 31st Street (which is also county road JB)...one mile west of Highway 83 in the Karcher Marsh State Wildlife Area.  Thirty-first street runs on the Kenosha-Racine County line.  There is a very small parking lot located off of 31st street.

This will be the first work that TU is doing on spring fed Karcher Creek. Some brushing work has already been done but there is plenty to do.

Work will be mostly cutting and dragging brush away from the stream corridor.  Most volunteers should wear knee boots (it is a marsh), work gloves and safety glasses. We have a limited supply of loppers in the trailer thus volunteers should loppers if they have them. One or two people will need to gear up for cutting with chainsaws. Also a handful of people could wear waders or hip boots for retrieving branches from the stream.

There are two main ways to get to Karcher Creek from the north.  One is to take highway 83 south into western Racine County around Burlington and continue south on Highway 83.  Take a right at 31st Street/County Rd JB and continue west for one mile.  Turn right into the parking of the Karcher Marsh State Wildlife Area.

You could also take I-94 south into Racine county and exit onto Highway 11.  Take Highway 11 west to Highway 83. Turn left onto Highway 83. Take a right onto 31st Street/County Rd JB and continue west for one mile.  Turn right into the parking of the Karcher Marsh State Wildlife Area.

Whichever way you travel be careful on the southside of Burlington where Highway 83 turns makes a south (at a light) toward Kenosha County.

The workday will start at 9:00am and continue until noon followed by our traditional brat fry.  SEWTU is looking forward to meeting members of the Oakbrook IL TU Chapter who will be joining us. To ensure the proper amount of food is purchased please RSVP Ken Rizzo at riz2337@yahoo.com.
