Little Wolf River
On Saturday, May 16, 2009, SEWTU returned to the center of Wisconsin to, for the second consecutive year, join forced with the Fox River Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited for a workday on the Little Wolf River near Iola, Wisconsin. This is the site of a large, ongoing project of the Fox River Valley Chapter, and we were honored to take part in thier work. Also present were members of the Wisconsin River Valley, Shawpaca, and Gary Borger Chapters of Trout Unlimited. In short, it was a great joint effort on behalf of Fox Valley TU's project. All participants are thanked for thier efforts!
The work was split up in to a number of categories. Some volunteers cut and removed invasive vegetation which was crowding the stream. Others used that brush to create brush bundles, and still others installed cedar posts using a water jet. Those posts were used to anchor logs to divert streamflow in areas where the creek had widened detrimentally. The aforementioned brush bundles were, in conjunction with used Christmas trees, installed to narrow the stream in order to increase flow and remove accumulated sediment. The results were very positive, and the future of this project looks very bright.
At the the conclusion of the workday, the Fox Valley Chapter treated all attendees to a free brat lunch, excellently prepared by FVTU member/leader Jim Hlaben. Overall, the day was a success, and SEWTU members were able to once again work with a number of other strong chapters, and to enjoy some great central-Wisconsin area fishing afterwards.
